Most people who have lost a job at one time or another have been offered a COBRA plan, the opportunity to purchase on their own the very same insurance their company offered. COBRA, which stands for Consolidated Omnibus Budget and Reconciliation Act of 1986, provides for individuals and dependents to continue coverage under their group medical insurance for up to 18 months. Employees who take the coverage have also found that they were paying as much as 102% of the employer's cost. Research shows that, for a family of four, the total cost of COBRA coverage could be as much as $500 to $900 a month or even more.
